The Messel is a disused mine. Was known by the Messel Pit and beautifully preserved fossils found there are of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects and plants from the Eocene. Best known is the early equine Propalaeotherium, were found by more than 70 individuals. Other important findings are Messelornis cristata, a crane bird, about half of all be found in the Messel Pit Fossil bird belongs, and an extinct primate. The Messel Pit is the first of the three UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites in Germany
