Es ist ca. 10 km von Oberhof entfernt und liegt am Waldrand des Rennsteiggebietes. Oberhof ist als deutsches Wintersportzentrum bekannt. Besonders populär sind hier die Sportarten Biathlon, Rennrodeln bzw. Bobsport, Skilanglauf und die Nordische Kombination. Die Stadt lebt vom Tourismus.
