Im Jahr 2000 wurde das Bergwerk Göttelborn stillgelegt, auf dem ehemaligen Absinkweiher werden bis Ende des Jahres 50.000 Solarmodule aufgestellt, damit ist es die größte Photovlotaikanlage der Welt. www.energis.de. Das Steinkohlekraftwerk entstand um 1920 in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Bergwerk Göttelborn. Eine architektonische Besonderheit ist der Freiluftkessel der an 4 Stützen in 120 m Höhe aufgehängt ist. Erzeugt wird neben Strom auch Fernwärme. 2002 wurde das Kraftwerk modernisiert, um den Schadstoffausstoß zu verringern.
